2009-06-06 SF Cats Examiner: HSUS calls on California to spare shelter cats and dogsThe Humane Society of the United States and other national and state animal shelter organizations are urging California lawmakers not to make shelter cats and dogs victims of the state budget crisis. HSUS says that proposed cuts in the state budget would suspend the and ldquo;animal adoption mandate, and rdquo; effectively reducing by three days the holding period for stray dogs and cats in the state and rsquo;s municipal animal shelters. The current requirement that stray dogs and cats be held for at least four or six days (depending on hours of operation) was established in 1997 with the passage of the Hayden bill. The bill provided that stray animals be held an additional three days in order to give pet owners more time to locate lost animals and to give unclaimed animals more time to either be adopted or transferred to an animal rescue group. www.examiner.com

The Lonely Miaow Association, based in Auckland, endorses the efforts of Dave McKay and others in trapping stray cats on the Otago Peninsula. Our aim is "No More Strays". All stray cats should be trapped, assessed, and then either rehomed or euthanased. It is vital to trap the last one, as a single female can give birth to up to fifteen kittens each summer. The Auckland Regional Council has made the dumping of cats illegal under their Pest Management Strategy. It is also illegal under the Animal Welfare Act. www.odt.co.nz

A CAT protection group is sending out an SOS to get people to return traps they have borrowed to catch stray cats. Residents borrow the traps to catch stray and feral cats, which are then taken in by the charity and rehomed. The Bexley, Dartford and Darenth Valley branch of Cats Protection, a welfare charity for cats, works on a tight budget and is running out of traps. We are very busy at the moment and have dire need of all our traps to enable us to deal with the volume of strays in the borough. www.newsshopper.co.uk

But theres more. When this story broke, another list emerged, supposedly with politically correct names that PETA might have suggested for other bands. Remember the band Meat Loaf How does "Lentil Loaf" sound Would Stray Cats be the same if they were the "Spayed Cats" Somehow, I dont reckon any of those would work . And now on to this weeks question. A story on the newswires recently reported complaints to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about topical flea medications. These are the so-called "spot-on pesticides"; the ones that give monthly protection against fleas and ticks. If you believe the media reports, it seems that more and more dogs and cats are getting sick, exhibiting rashes and other reactions after these medications were applied to their skin. This news is somewhat surprising, since these products have been on the market for many years now. But more pet owners are now using flea control. And the chance for an allergic reaction is always possible when any medication is administered to a pet or a person. www.gilroydispatch.com
